Is Your Home Clean?? See For Yourself!

Here is one simple test you can do to find out. Go to the couch/sofa used most often and with
an open hand slap one of the cushions. Did dust fly out of the cushion? If so, then your vacuum
and/or air conditioning filter may not be doing its job. Every time you sit in your favorite chair,
walk on carpet, or even move the sheets on your bed you release dirt, dust, and other particles into
the air you breathe. Add this to other everyday tasks such as cooking or even using candles or
other air fresheners. You may be living in a home that is just not healthy for you. The EPA states
that Six out of 10 homes and buildings are "sick" and are hazardous to occupants.
Due to the rising cost of energy in America there was a change in how buildings and homes
were constructed. The use of tyvec (c) and other wrapping products were designed to keep air inside
buildings resulting in lower heating and cooling costs. However, this resulted in these buildings no
longer being allowed to "breathe". Previously, air was not trapped inside the home. Buildings were
drafty, and the "bad" air inside escaped and was replaced with cleaner outside air. In a sense we
traded cleaner air for lower energy consumption.
While the past several years have seen a "green revolution," most of the focus has been on
making homes more energy efficient and reducing building waste. Improving the quality of life that
the new homeowner enjoys after moving in seems to be an afterthought. Year after year has
conditioned us to the bad air in our homes and businesses. Most of us don't even notice or think
about the air quality around us. Yet we consume filtered or bottled water because of what may be
in the city drinking water. But let's assume a person drinks 2 liters of bottled water in a day. The
same average sized adult will breathe 10,800 liters of air per day! Why isn't air quality a bigger
focus?
Now, we cant live in a "clean room" such as ones where computer chips are made, but you can
take steps to help improve the air quality in your home. Here are just a few simple ideas.
- Throw out the scented candles, canned air fresheners, and plug-ins.
- Use the hood vent every time you cook.
- If it's nice out, crack the windows open and enjoy the fresh air.
- Give your couches, chairs, drapes, and bedding a good cleaning.
- Make sure your air filter, return, and vents are clean.
Help improve your air quality in your home. I would be willing to bet that once you are
accustomed to the cleaner, healthier environment that you physically notice the bad air when you
go into a home or building with "bad" air.
